Would a 1dx mk 1 focus quicker than my 7d mk ii when using 300mm 2.8 is + 2xiii extenders and just faster in general without extenders , thanks

Yes it will focus faster it has 2 processors and the battery has a higher output so can drive the motors quicker ,the general feel of 1d cameras is faster at everything than the 7d series.

In the voice of Denzel Washington in Red October "I concur" :)

and would it be better also with the 2x extender as with using it with my 7d ii its not the fastest at getting focus , basically i am trying to decide if i should keep my lens and extenders and get a 1dx or keep my 7d mk ii and get a 500mm f4 is version 1 ?

A bit of a hard choice, reach is nearly always what we want/need the 500 takes a 1.4 very well not so much the 2x though so you would have 700 + the crop 980mm f5.6 V 600mm f5.6 on the 1d AF would be a close call with the 1d just a shade quicker i think.

As long as you're using the mk3 2x extender along with the mk2 300mm I'd suggest that as long as your technique is up to it then that will give you the best results in reach limited situations.

The mk2 lens with mk3 converter combo has different (and better) communications than the older gear, that coupled with the 1dx will allow for better AF.

I've used my 500mm f4 is (version 1) with both 1dx and 7dii and with the mk2 1.4x converter and whilst it is very good the mk 2 lenses I've tried do show a noticeable upgrade in IQ.

How you balance the cost v IQ improvement is down to you, but if 600mm on full frame is long enough for you, then for me its a no-brainer

Hi my 300mm is version 1 not the mk ii

My 7D2 works remarkably well with my 300 F2.8 L IS (Mk1) with both 1.4 ans 2x Mk3 extenders, however my 1DX works better.

With either camera if you are relying on extenders to get "Reach" then a longer lens is what I would recommend. Unfortunately they are big, heavy and expensive - such is life! Whilst an older model the 500 F4 L IS is still an excellent lens, but if you could stretch to it, the Mk2 does have advantages in weight and use with extenders. As a bare lens there is not too much in it but the Mk2 is more versatile and portable.

Just my thoughts.

would you say the IQ with the 1DX is better with the 2xiii on your 300mm than your 7d2 , and do you still find you have enough reach when using the 1dx over the 7d2

The IQ and AF are better with my 1DX, however (under ideal conditions) the 7D2 does have a reach advantage - but this is not the norm as the 1DX is a better all-rounder as far as lighting and AF are concerned.

Decisions decisions..............

A couple of rather old ones. I didn't really get on with FLIKR - but that is just me. My username is the same so you might be able to find them.

Where are you based, there might be someone on TP that is local to you with a 1DX that could meet up and fire off a few shots to compare?
