So I left the comfort of my trusty Linux-based studio and hit the road with my camera, a rather limited supply of memory cards, and a borrowed laptop running Windows 2000 with all the latest Canon camera software installed from their website. What could possibly go wrong?

Firstly, one of the memory cards from yesterday's shoot appears corrupt; at least, the camera seems to read it fine, but the USB card reader I brought along claims that the folder is "corrupted and unreadable."

Bearing in mind that I need these photos, well, about 5 hours ago, I thought I'd try plugging the camera, an EOS 1Ds MkII, directly into the computer via USB (no 1394 on this machine). Great, only the computer doesn't seem to think my camera is a 1Ds at all. The driver is already installed, but the computer still attempts to search for it before offering to disable the device for me. If I locate the .INF file manually, it doesn't show any devices to install.

If anyone has any suggestions for either recovering the files using the USB card reader (I tried scandisk which found no problems) or getting the driver to work with this evil machine, I'd really appreciate your input.

Just for info, camera firmware is version 1.1.6 and the driver I downloaded is 5.5.0.10 (released 23/08/2004).

Don't know if you managed to solve the problem, I've just noticed your post.

This may seem stupid but have you loaded ZoomBrowser, with the appropriate WIA support for the 1Ds installed. I had similar trouble when shooting tethered with my 5D. Having used the software with my 20D I didn't think I needed to re install it again. However you need to so that the WIA ( whatever that is) is installed for the camera you are using. It all comes on one of the disks with the camera

I've also had trouble retrieving corrupted cards with the Lexar software that's why I use PhotoRescue
 
Have you used that card reader with that memory card before ? Try a different card reader ? I have some cards (Sandisk Extreme 4) that 2 of my card readers said were corrupt but a different card reader they are fine on :)
 
Can't help other than to say rip 2k off the laptop and put a nice Linux distro on for them, they'll thank you for it and all will be happy :)

What make / model is the card reader? Had a Belkin which would do this all the time and was dog slow. Binned it in the end for a Sandisk firewire one and haven't had an issue since.
 
Hi people, time for an update...

Being Windows 2000, I'm pretty sure it uses TWAIN drivers, not WIA. If I'm wrong, then that'll be the problem! But yes, I did freshly install ZoomBrowser along with the drivers.

As for the memory card, I use an el-cheapo Jessops card reader that I picked up years ago, and it has never failed me before. I did eventually use another PC and managed to connect the camera directly, but still couldn't get the photos. Then I was silly enough to try fsck on the card without making a binary copy first - and that was the end of it! I have deduced, however, that the FAT was pretty messed up anyway.

Next time I go on a trip, I think I'll just take my own PC. It might be excessively heavy and too big for the camera bag, but at least I know it works!
