Hey guys, I was wondering what the main differences between these two bodys are? I can see the mkII N has a bigger screen but haven't noticed much else?

Also would either one of these, probably the mkII N be a worthwhile upgrade from my current 40D???

As well as the bigger screen the 1D2N has improved buffering and you can also write different formats to both the CF and SD card (Raw to one and Jpg to the other) on the 1D2N
Not sure there's any other difference.

In terms of your upgrade question.

I currently have a 1D2 and a 40D

Nothing in it really in terms of image quality and they're about on a par when it comes to noise at higher ISO.

Compared to the 1.6 crop of the 40D - the 1.3 crop of the 1D2 obviously looses you a bit of 'reach' and being a lower resolution camera you can't always rely on cropping the image to compensate.

The 1D2 is miles ahead of the 40D when it comes to the autofocus and for things like tracking birds in flight - you'd be forgiven for thinking your 40D was broken when you went back to it.

Have you used a 1D2 ? - navigation takes a bit of getting used to and I know plenty of folk who just couldn't be doing with the two handed approach.

I haven't used any 1D body to be honest, I've rescenty noticed that these seem to be a bargain for what they are. But if the image quality isn't much better, then there's probably not much point as I'm not sure I would benefit THAT much from the improved autofocus.

I used to own a 40d and now own a 7d and 1d mkii n. Personally I think the 1d
has the best IQ of the three.
 
The 1dmk2n was brought out to fix a lot of problems that came with a mk2. the mk2n is a much better camera

Really ?

I'm considering a 7D instead of a 1D2 so would be keen to hear more about how you find the IQ to be worse....
 
I have a 50D, 5D and a 1Dmk2. I'd consider upgrading to a 1DMk2N in preference to a 1dMk3. The Mk2N was supposed to be quite a significant upgrade in terms of handling but not in IQ, so if you can live with a Mk2 it might be a better option than a Mk2N. Mk2 's are getting a liitle long in the tooth now. Having said that I love mine, big brick outhouse that it is and is my tool of choice if the conditions are the slightest demanding. Once you have used a pro body you'll find it very hard to use anything else. For ultimate IQ obviously the 5D is the way to go, just depends what you want to upgrade for.
Budegt for a flash gun too as neither have a pop-up one. Not sure what PC operating system the 1DMk2 (or N) will now work with i.e. you're running the latest version of windows it might be worth checking. Some of the custom functions can only be used/changed via Firewire, never got it to work on my PC/Camera, lots of stories regarding that "failure", not sure if that affects the Mk2N though.

Don't know really, just prefer the images from the 1d.
I shoot mainly sport, don't know if this has anything to do with it and I think the extra DOF makes a difference.
For me the 7d images although sharp and full of detail just lack something.
Body is the word that springs to mind if that makes any sense.
 
OK Chas - Sounds like it's a 'just can't put my finger on it' type of view but the DOF comment makes sense.

I love the AF and the build but I just get a bit frustrated with the 1.3 crop esp when the low res doesn't lend itself too well to cropping.
 
The crop is not as bad for me shooting sports as for you with birds.
If I'm at an airshow I always use the 7d, or when at bird displays again the 7d for the reason you just mentioned.
I really don't think there is much in it apart from(for me perhaps)personal preference and subject matter.
 
I've loved my 1D Mk2, I'm buying another soon too as a second body.

Same as with the 5D (mk1) - in theory it doesnt have the highest resolution but the images have that 'something'.

So when do you use the 1D2 then ?
