1D Mk IIN general performance question

Spot metering is relativly useless for covering Rugby when there are so many differing tones whizzing past the focus point, its just too accurate and will leave me with under or over exposed images and nothing just right.

Im not complaining im just saying that in certain uses the 300mm has advantages over the 400mm

I do use spot metering but not for fast moving sports images, it doesnt work.

Full frame average metering - just mixes all the tones in the scene down to 18% grey.
Actually that's a bit misleading. It mixes all the tones in the scene down to an average tone, and whatever that tone is (light or dark) judges it to be 18% grey, which is why if you take shots of a piece of white paper and then a piece of black paper, filling the screen in each case, you get identical grey images.

LOL I hear you! I was just suggesting spot metering for this exposure test between the two lenses.
