Yes
I'm thinking of getting one longer range lens as a carry about lens, the idea is to save weight and bulk on long hikes, I suppose in an ideal world I'd like a 10-500mm 2.8, but as I'm out of luck on that I have to go with something like a 18-200-ish anybody got any recomendations??
Thanks Wayne

I used to have a Tamron 18-200, and whilst it was handy for zooming from wide without having to change lens, it hunted a lot in low light, and the IQ wasn't brilliant. I definitely prefer my 2 lens combo, even if they are at the budget end of things.

Well these were taken with my tamron 18-200 and i think its a good quality lens..

Is it Canon or Nikon Wayne?

I neglected an 18-200VR after swapping my 30D plus lenses for a D200 plus lenses, but after taking it on holiday I was very pleasantly surprised.

Although it's not the fastest glass, it's sharp enough and has good use on holiday and in circs in keeping weight to a minimum (hiking).
I don't use it for paid jobs buts for a personal kick about lens it's serves a good purpose.

I have the canon 18-200mm IS. I use it a lot for the convenience factor when it's not practicle to carry other lenses. The focusing seems to be very accurate, but it is a little soft at the extremes. It will never be as good as a prime but I wouldn't be without it. The IS works a treat.

Amateur Photographer (cover date 27 June 2009) has a head to head test of the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.4-5.6 IS against the Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Asph (IF) Macro. This is the issue on the shelf NOW but will be replaced tomorrow.

Has anybody tried or have opinions on the Sigma 18-200 OS?

I know Chase Jarvis uses the Nikon one, but only for location scouting as he says the iq isn't up to standard. Ken Rockwel, on the other hand thinks it's the perfect lens :cuckoo:

For convenience though, I'd imagine it's hard to beat.

We use both systems so I'm not too bothered really. I'm just fed up of carrying a load of kit on long walks, but that said I want something half decent.

Thanks for all the replies. Wayne

I went from a 55-200mm Tamron to an 18-200mm Tamron, then back to a 55-200mm Tamron!!!

I know these aren't the lenses you'd be buying, but I found the 55-200mm much better IQ wise. I hate changing lenses on the move though and do miss the convenience!

I have heard other Sony users say that the much more expensive 18-250mm Tamron/Sony lens is loads better.....

i have 1 and i have had a few cracking shots with it but my skills are very very armature so i am finding it a difficult lens to get on with although its probably not the lens just me lol

I had a Nikon 18-200vr and was very pleased with it. Some people love to knock this lens, but, if you understand its limitations, its great. It can be a little soft at 200mm, but other than that ( and the lens creep, fixed with a rubber band) its a worthy addition to your lens collection.
I really regret selling mine....
