Right guys What's the difference in quality and build etc. Would really like a better response than the last view things I posted on here. Would love people to help me guide me not bite my head off. As I'm sure there is some decent people in this forum.
Thanks
David

I've used both, and while there is more reach and a bit wider there is not to much between iq. You will get better build quality and faster focus. Have you looked at the tamron 17-50 2.8.

It gets very good reports and is a constant aperture of 2.8 so good for low light. I tried one in jessops and that's what Im after. There are 2 models, a vc(vibration compensation)and a non vc. The non vc is the one to go for as its sharper across the frame and can be picked up for around £200. I just missed one in the classifies although also have a wanted advert.

the 18-55IS gets pretty good reviews from most of the reputable reviewers, I always check photozone.de for impartial reviews and while they give the 18-55IS a good conclusion the 17-85 doesn't. (in fact they said it had some world record features (bad ones ;)).

If you want longer reach than the 18-55, consider the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 OS.

No problem David, while I havent had the OS version of the 17-70, I have had the non OS model.

I don't think I have seen a 17-70OS owner that didn't like their lens.
