HI all,

Soon to be off to Florida and was wondering if i will have any issues with a non-L Lens?

Ill be on a cruise and staying in Miami. I originally bought the 17-40mm L as i needed a good wide lens but have now been researching the 17-55 2.8 which looks like a better option.

Will i have any problems with the lack of a weather seal in the heat/humid conditions or have any issues with dust / sand as the barrel moves with the zoom unlike the L?

any advise would be most appreciated.

I have been to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale just the beginning of this month. Carried my Nikon D40 and non-sealed lenses around all the time. No problem, but it didn't rain.

In March 2009 we went on a cruise from Miami around central America and the Caribbean.
We took various excursions including one on a river boat in Costa Rica where is was hot and very sticky.
Don't worry about it, your kit will be fine.
At the time I had 450D, 55-250 and a 17-85 and everything was fine.
Over Xmas we were in Eilat, Israel, I took a cheap rain cover to use when we were in the desert and again, all was fine.
Enjoy the holiday and get shooting :D

Just out of interest what cruise company are you going with and what's the itinerary?

Thats good.... of to find a 17-55 then!

Going with Royal Carribbean.

Got 3 night stay in fort lauderdal
7 night easter carridean cruise
  1. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  2. Nassau, Bahamas
  3. Cruising
  4. Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas
  5. Philipsburg, St. Maarten
  6. Cruising
  7. Cruising
then got 4 night stay in miami

Should be fine... so long as you don't get so much clog in there that it hinders the ability of the actual lens parts to move then I wouldn't worry... Worry about your equipment being buggered when it IS buggered... lol.

Nice, enjoy :D

We cruise with Royal Caribbean and we will be doing our third cruise in July, a 7 days land tour then a 7 days cruise of Alaska.
I really can't wait to go!

Thats for all the advise.... Now looking for a 17-55

Good luck in your hunt, it's a fantastic lens.

I must warn you though, the IS on my 17-55 has just recently developed a fault and shakes the viewfinder violently and makes a loud noise. After searching online, it seems this is not an uncommon thing with this lens.........and appears to be a design fault.

Unfortunately for me, I bought second hand and the lens was out of warranty, so I have been quoted £160 for the repair. I'm off on a trip in 2 days so I'll have to use it without the IS......which is still great and totally usable, but just a word of warning. If you can't find a really good deal second hand..........it may even be better to buy new for that extra security. It could just be lenses that are from an older batch.........or just something that develops over time and use.

Bit of a shame, because this lens is absolutely amazing in every other aspect.

I wouldn't be too quick to jump on the IS failure that you have experienced as a design fault. The IS on the 17-55 will be the same (or very similar design) as the 3-stop IS found on many other Canon IS lenses of a similar vintage. Having a search myself the IS failure doesn't seem to give enough evidence to suggest that it is a systematic design fault with the 17-55 in particular.

There will be failures, the 17-55 is a popular lens and there are lots of them out there. Don't forget you are more likely to hear about people with problems than people who have no issues.

Sorry to hear yours has failed. Although the £160 to have it fixed outside warranty doesn't sound terribly unreasonable.

You have a good point........there are probably a lot more out there that don't have any issues

It's probably more of a generic IS fault come to think of it..........as I think other lenses with the same IS system have also had issues, including L lenses.

I would have thought you would need to worry more about oil than sand/dust! ;)
Enjoy your trip.
And enjoy the 17-55 when you get it. I love mine. Be prepared to get dust in the lens though. Then again, I always seem to pickup dust in my Canon lenses whether they are zoom or prime, just not as much as in the 17-55mm.
Doesnt seem to affect it though so dont stress too much about that.
