Yes
I've just bought a HOYA Super HMC Pro UV filter for the front of my 17-40L and I think the front element on the lens touches the filter. :|

It's difficult to tell but I tested it by placing a small square of thin paper in between the two before I put the filter on, and when at either end of the zoom in definitely stops the paper moving around.

Any ideas what I can do about this? Does anyone else use a UV on a 17-40L and if so which brand?

Thanks :)

I wouldnt worry about it Richard, the front element of the 17-40 doesnt move while zooming or focussing, all the mechanical jiggery pokery is internal, its also unlikely a filter will touch the front element anyway.

The front element does extend during zooming on my 17-40 but I do not think it goes past the lens shell

I have no filters on mine but it looks quite close at 17 and at 40mm when the glass is at its furthest.

mine doesn't move

I can clearly see the internal elements moving when zooming between 17 and 40

Maybe Canon have made some changes because their webby says that the minimum focusing distance is * as of blah/03

Try putting a dab of talcum powder in the centre of the front lens element. Screw the filter all the way home then remove it. If any talc has transferred to the filter... then it's touching...if not you're OK.

The front element on my 17-40L doesn't move at all during focusing but it does move during zooming.

If the filter is touching the only thing I can suggest is slightly unscrew it. Stick a bit of tape along one edge if you think there's any danger of losing it.

Good idea!

It's close, but it looks like there's at least 1mm of clearance between the filter and lens.

Phew!

Thanks everyone :)
