OK folks, I've been scouring the net with increasing frustration, for what I thought would be a seemingly simple requirement.

I want a new laptop, there are plenty out there that meet my needs/price range, but my frustration is almost all of them have a number pad.

I don't want to buy a laptop with a number pad. Invariably I will use it on my lap while ensconced on a sofa. So I want the keyboard to be as central as possible and the touchpad to be pretty central too. Anything else is a posture nightmare waiting to b****r my shoulder up (again). Most 15 inchers have the keyboard/touchpad well over to the left.

So far, I have found the Dell Inspiron 15 / 15R / 15R SE / 15Z meet my requirements. Not the new models mind, the older chassis that will be discontinued soon I expect.

So, before I shell out, anyone know of any others?

Sorry Mike, gotta be a windows machine.

If I were in macbook money I'd just pick up a well specced Dell XPS model and be done with it :)

I'm writing this on a Dell Vostro which is 15.6" and has no number pad?

Think Dell are about the only ones making a laptop without the number pad but as you say its the old model as a newer one has been released.

In a similar situation. Seems only the ultra compacts (which are expensive) ditch the keypad. If you find anything around 15" without the keypad - and a non-glossy screen - let me know!

Thanks for the ideas folks.

I guess I made my search harder by deciding I wanted higher than 1366x768 resolution!

Narrowed it down to Dell 15R SE or the 15z (Although with the 15z I would need to buy a screen upgrade seperately). Will probalby end up with the 15R SE with 1080p screen though

Lenovo W510 (or W520/530, whatever the latest version is).

Beautiful high-gamut 15.6" matte 1080p screen as well, have one as my work machine. You won't find a better keyboard on a laptop either. No numpad, central trackpad and trackpoint.

I've used a lot of different brands and dragged them all over the place for work, and I would go with Lenovo over Dell/HP, every time, even if they cost a little more!

I would love a Lenovo business class model, until recently I used on for work. (We now have HP elitebooks, which are equally well built). However costing a little more is an understatement! For the same spec as the Dell I'm looking at, you are talking 3 times the price.

OK, figured I would update this with my final choice.

I purchased last week a Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook. Not a typical ultrabook, it's a bit chunkier and more powerful. It's got discrete intel graphics and also an Nvidia 630m graphics for when more grunt is needed. Plus a 1600x900 screen.

More importantly - no numberpad and the touchpas is central.

Feels like a perfect fit, even through it came in about £200 over initial budget!
