12th Challenge for the days ahead - winners announced!

The theme for this weeks challenge is

Numbers.

I've been wanting to do this theme for a while now and am looking forward to how it gets interpreted by different people. As with previous challenges, think as outside of the box as you like.

As I'm not able to post an entry this week I have included an example below of just how I personally interpreted the theme - for those who are scratching their heads or wondering what floats the judges boat this week

The rules:

All new photos, the idea is to take something new within the time frame!
Maximum of 3 entries per person!
Limited PP, cropping, exposure control, sharpening etc is okay, multi layered cut and pasting is not!
The winner chooses the theme for the following challenge!

Entries can be posted from 8pm on Friday until 8pm on Sunday, with the winner announced later that evening.

Good luck to everyone who takes part!

Another attempt hope it makes it in time

Thanks to everyone who posted an entry this week. Off to have a ponder now and will post the results later on.

And so after much careful consideration it's time to post the results. First off, let me thank everyone who participated. There were a number of worthy contenders this week and I wish I could have awarded more than 3 winning entries. Alas I can't so someone somewhere will always be dissapointed. :(

In 3rd place, by Shoshone: This photo struck me with not only it's simplicity in structure and colour, but a well worn surface with many a hidden tale it could tell (were it possible). A great shot, nicely executed.

And in 2nd place: Binary, by Jennyb. What a great shot! This one was a subject which really hit home for me, not only because of the use of numbers, but because I remember studying binary too long ago to mention and it hurting my head until i eventually cracked it.

And this weeks winner is by Shorty: Money is the prime use of numbers for so many of us in our daily lives, and this shot very nicely captured that. From the lovely dof, to the angles and folds of the note, to the crispness of the focus. For me this just begged to be picked as the winning entry. Well done!

I do want to mention a couple of notable entries which could have made it to the top 3 places but didn't.

The first is EdBray's dice photo. When I first saw this I immediately thought I'd seen the winning shot. However, something struck me as a bit "off" with the shot. Eventually i pinned it down to symmetry. Everything about the shot said "4" except one of the sides only had 3 dice. With hindsight had the subject been symmetrical then I am certain I would have chosen it as the winner. Ed, a fantastic shot all the same!

And Wack61's motorbike. Another stunning shot, beautifully executed with great panning. Wish my panning was that good. :'( For me it almost made the top three except the shot didn't quite seem to match the subject except in a very small way. Had the subject been bikes or transport etc then you would have been in my list of finalists. I hope what i've said will help you win this challenge another time mate.

So having announced this weeks winners it's time to hand over the reigns to Shorty for the 13th challenge. Shorty, can I suggest Landscapes for this challenge - only because i've just replaced my tripod and will be spending plenty of time using it this week. ;) Ps. Any chance you can send me the winning shot, well the subject of it anyway?

Congrats to Shorty and everyone

:bang: Missed it this week I thought I had more time, till Thursday, think it was with the allotted time change last challenge,

I had in mind as my images Greek,

#1 --- Alpha (1), ( close-up of a Alpha Romeo Badge),
#2 --- Sigma (200), ( Sigma lens at 200mm)
#3 --- Pi, (a custard or Meat and Potato Pie reflected on a black plate)

never mind look forward to Shorty's Challenge,

Dave

Erm. What appears to have happened here?:cuckoo::eek::eek:

Thank you for picking me hepburn :):cuckoo:

Right, this thinking cap needs to go on!!!

Congratulations to the winners.

Looking forward to the next one, whilst I didn't get placed in this one, I probably learnt more participating in this one than I have for ages

Ah, that be because the previous challenge ran for an unusual 2 weeks.

Erm. What appears to have happened here?:cuckoo::eek::eek:

err... I think you posted the winning shot! Don't forget to post a link in this thread pointing to the next challenge thread too. If you need any help just pm or ask here.

Glad to hear that Ed. As the saying goes, it's the taking part that counts. I've certainly learnt a bit too, not only from seeing how others interpreted the subject, but also from the judging aspect.

I liked Eds Odd One Out 3, well thought out

It was a cracking shot Dave, and it got an notable mention. See below:

Thanks for the comments  although the shot i enjoyed the most and learnt from undertaking was the dice moving one, the 'Odd One Out' was just an afterthought really as I had bought a box of 27 dice (I went in to town early on Saturday morning, from the geeky role playing games shop in the town, it was weird going in there, there are some strange individuals who are into that sort of thing ) to do the movement shot I had in mind (can't seem to by a pair of dice anymore ), and when I tipped the dice out of the cube container there was this numbered one in the middle (I suspect only God and the Geeks know what it is for).

Reason for the 3 rows, well, 27 dice arranged in such a way that some were OOF close, some were OOF long with the only sharp one as the numbered one somewhere in the middle left me limited options so I chose rows of 3 to enable me to build them up to give me the depth in the photo I needed to have OOF dice on either side of the focussed point.

I do see where you are coming from though, and whilst I had seen a silmilar shot to the one I took for the moving dice, the 'Odd One Out' shot was an idea that was formed simply by having the amount of dice available to play with.

I will have another go later, but will cut come filler bits from wood to give me the depth I require which will enable the use of the dice only as facing tiles.

I might still have a go at my images I had planned took me ages to think of something so it seems a waste not to do them now

Dave,

Surely that would have worked were the subject 'Letters'....but numbers?

Jamie
;)

Hi Jon,

Thanks for giving me third, 'twas more than it deserved.

Whilst waiting for your decision, I tried to do the same thing myself (i.e try to decide who should win), and I somehow thought that Jenny's bluebells might just take it. I hope it's OK to analize after the event.

You see she is the preson who really took us right outside the box IMHO (and you did encourage this). She also implicitley demonstrated to me just how damn literal I had been and no doubt tend to be...so thanks Jenny.

Well done Shorty!! Nice one!

Jamie

Many thanks for my second place, Hepburn. I must admit I was pleased with that one. Actually binary is not that difficult and it is much easier to handle if you convert it into hexadecimal. However, I did not think you would appreciate a picture of hexadecimal!

There were some great entries. It is surprising how many different angles you get on a topic like this one.

Jenny

:rules: :D

Yeh like that Ed but why the arrow?

There was this other dice in the pack with an arrow on four sides and a circly thing on the other 2 sides, I just thought it would be different add a bit of interest and act as a 'lead in' to the 4.

I would have accepted letters representing numbers. No problemo... :)

Thanks for giving me third, 'twas more than it deserved.

You're welcome. I disagree with your comment. For me your shot was a fitting 3rd place.

I hope it's OK to analize after the event.

Of course. As long as people don't try and turn it into questioning the judging. The roots of this challenge are to encourage everyone and not just the technically perfectly executed shots. When it comes to judging it's easy to overlook some shots for the more powerful and obvious forerunners. I, like everyone here who has judged (I hope), looked at every image for merits and demerits before settling on 3 and placing them in the respective order. Just as we all have different image ideas and executions, we also all have different things we look for when selecting the winners. :)

Well done to all the entrants, the standard was very high.

Indeed. where was your entry btw Marc? Too busy in sarfend I reckon ;)

Many thanks for my second place, Hepburn. I must admit I was pleased with that one.

Good. It was well deserved!

Odd One Out 2. Any better?

Yes. but I think it would look better with the arrow in focus along with the 4. Any chance of seeing that configuration Ed?
