I've found myself with a few 127 cameras that I might like to try out. I've already tried a couple using 35mm film with new masks and roll spacers.
For the next few, I might try some 120 film cut down to size.

I read that 127 cameras gave 12 4x4 exposures per roll, not the 16 that i might expect on 120 length.
I think that I will be OK with the film cutting, but will a full roll of 120 be too thick for these cameras?

EDIT: Remembering that one of the cameras that I modified had plenty of space for the 35mm cassette, but another would need to have something thinner. So I guess that the answer is that it is related to the camera film chamber size... Try it and see.

I made what looks similar to a miniature carpenter's mitre box to position a blade of a craft knife nicely perpendicular to the roll of film.
With a little pressure on the knife, I twisted the roll (with the blade in nearly the right place) and cut through the film and backing... in relatively dim light.
I didn't cut enough off by maybe 1/2 mm and had to loosen one end of the metal 127 spool to take the width.

So, after a bit of a struggle in the changing bag, the film was wound onto another spool, now the wrong way round, then back onto a 127 spool.
I was pleased to find that the whole 120 roll went onto the 127 spool without being obviously much thicker than would fit into a fairly slim 127 camera.
It's in the camera and I can see frame numbering in the little red window! I hope that they are the 16-on numbers that I see.

EDIT: well, having not thought it through properly, I was left with a 50-50 chance that I cut off the wrong end of the roll. Of course, I had cut the wrong end off. On top of that, the film must be loaded backwards in order to see any numbers (at least for the 1-16 scale). I have rewound the film onto the spool backwards (from the "exposed" end) and can just see the bottom of the number 16. I hope that this gets easier or maybe the cameras will all provide poor results, so I may not have to do this many times.

AAMOI if you are doing your own dev then Paterson universal II tank does 127 film....plenty on the bay.

Yes, thanks. My Paterson Super System 4 35mm tanks have reels that adjust to 127/120/135, but the single 135 tank is not deep enough to accommodate it. The double tank is fine for one 127 sized reel, so I guess that I should manage. Just one thought: the film is wound tightly on the small diameter of the 127 spool that I can imagine some difficulty in getting it on the dev tank reels.
