found on play.com last night a canon 7d for £795, price is for brand new camera with 12 month Canon UK / European warranty, just wondering what people think, is it too good to be true with this warranty and price ?

12 month Canon UK / European warranty not worth it then ?

My 5D3 was sourced from Europe and had a 12 month Canon warranty plus an additional two years third party warranty on top of that, still with the huge savings on price. I have heard that things may have changed on terms of where the cameras originate, which might mean the Canon warranty is not available, although you will still get three years in any case. The best thing to do would be to contact them and confirm the facts.

With all that said, in my experience all that Canon UK requires in order to honour warranty in the UK is a "proof of purchase" for which a UK VAT receipt ought to be sufficient. For some reason the advice is to ask for one when you place the order. I asked as suggested and I received a copy. So far, almost a year later, I have had no need to put any warranty cover to the test for my camera.

I would also go with hdew purely for the three year warranty and price, I have just had to use it and they use a camera shop up in Glasgow called Aj Johnstone and funnily enough I have just received my camera back today.

there must be some downside to buying a grey import though or everybody would be buying them from hdew, are you telling me it is the exact same camera that you would buy from a high street store ?

Its exactly the same camera, except it may have a different user manual, and a battery charger that requires a different plug or an adapter, and the firmware may have a different selection of languages installed.

However, it was sourced in a different country, so the warranty is for that region.

It was imported to the UK, possibly misrepresented at some point for import duty/tax purposes and then delivered to you.

Check to see who provides the additional warranty - is it worth the paper its written on. Will the retailer still be in business in 1, 2 or 3 years? It is fairly likely that Canon would be.

Only you can decide whether the saving now is worth it or not.

However, as has been pointed out by Todd, a VAT receipt means that Canon will treat it exactly the same as any other EU-bought camera.

The big difference between the way that hdew and the Hong Kong-based importers operate is that the others make the purchaser the person committing the illegal acts. Hdew provide a VAT receipt, which is good enough to protect the purchaser.

Will Play, or Park, or WEx or Jessops still be in business in three years time? In what way would hdew going out of business be any different from Jessops going out of business?

Hdew, being a UK company can be taken to court in the UK. That's a big difference.

I purchased my 6D from HDEW and they were great. Even comes with the UK power adapter and English user manual.
