Hi,
I can't seem to make up my mind between these two. The 12-24mm is on sale here at £350. I can pickup the 16-85mm mint cond at £275 locally. It would be used for holidays. I don't like the idea of carrying any primes. I may do few close up shots of kids. Would I miss the 16-85mm range?? Also, I have the Nikon 24-85mm f2.8/4 D Lens if anyone is interested which I will be putting in classifieds when I get round to it.
Thanks in advance to all........

Without knowing exactly your style of shooting or where you are going for holidays (or what other lenses you have), I'd suggest the 16-85mm is generally a more suitable range.

You could make an offer on the brand new 16-85 in the classifieds ;-)

Never used the 12-24, but think it would be a bit restrictive for holidays. The 16-85 is a great lens. Feels so well built compared to others too.

I have the fx equiv. on my d800 it's an awesome lens but not best suited for every day shooting, the 16-35 is better.

however, just spent 2 weeks in the arctic with my d7000 and a tamron 18-270, never swapped the lens for the whole holiday

I would think that the 12-24 on its own would be a bit too wide for taking on holiday. As mentioned above, I think the 16-85 would be a better choice and having owned this lens before I am sure you will be very pleased with it.

If on the other hand you are willing to take more than one lens with you on holiday then the 12-24 would go well with your 24-85 lens.

As a single, cover most things on holiday lens, Phil's suggestion of the 18-200 is a good one, but out of the two you mention, i'd go with the 16-85.

I took mine on holiday a couple of years ago (on the D7000) & also took the 70-300, but never used it.

This is a crop from maybe 5yds away. It's been in PS & sharpened a tad, but shows that you can crop in on shots that aren't ideal distance.

I certainly wouldn't use the 12-24 for "closeups" of the kids - you're going to get some weird distortions :D

On its own the 12-24 would probably be too wide, even on crop but as an additional lens, I love mine and that's on FF! My most used lens is still the 24-70 (on FF) though.

Not sure how much the 12-24 Nikkor (which I presume is the 12-24 under discussion here) distorts but I'm pretty certain that it'll exaggerate perspective hugely in closeups! (Can be fun but never flattering! [And an 8mm fisheye's even more so!!!])

I have the 16-85mm VR and think it is an excellent lens, the best DX zoom imho.

It is perfect for holidays for me. Very rarely do I feel I want anything wider or longer, at least not enough to be lugging another lens around. :shake: I have borrowed a wide angle lens for a holiday once in the past, but hardly used it, so went down in priority of lenses I wanted.

I have a 70-300mm lens which I do take on holidays, just in case, but end up using the 16-85mm 95% of the time. The extra 2mm at the wide end makes a bigger difference than you would expect, and is more useful to me than the extra reach of a 18-105mm or a 18-200mm. The latter of which you start to sacrifice quality for range imho.

If you're selling the 24-85, then another vote for the 16-85...

The Nikkor 12-24mm is highly recommended, but you'll need some reach. A perfect partner is of course the 24-120mm f/4

+1 for the 16-85mm every time, I wish that I had seen the bargain you have as I paid £450 for mine with the £50 cashback. Ocassionaly I would like a little extra reach but for what I photograph it suits me perfectly. I look at other lenses almost daily but nothing really pops out and say's "buy me" with the exception of the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II but at well over a £1000 I can't justify it.

The 16-85mm mint for £275? An absolute no brainer for that price if you ask me. Go for it, it's a much more suitable range for general use.

Thanks to all for your kind input; settled for the 16-85 and I must say this is an exceptionally superb quality lens and I am very happy with it.:)
