Hi all

Just posting this as a little warning to others about 118118 The true cost of using this and probably other directory enquiry services

Just got my Phone bill in and noticed one higher than normal entry, when I checked it was for a call to 118118, the wife made for a phone number, all she got from them was the phone number, she didn't connect through them as she knows they have a rip-off price structure for connected calls.

The cost of providing one number came in at £8.29, what a Rip-off

Be warned

Paul

I struggle to see the need for using directory services when the internet is available to most people most of the time.

Still the £8.29 seems excessively high even for them

The trouble is the wife is unable to use the internet, she is completely technophobic, can't even figure out how to use a mouse, I gave up trying to teach her years ago, and she needed a number urgently and I was away from the house at the time.

They do have to pay for those two guys salary you know ;)
But yes I agree bloody outrageous!

2.75 for the call plus 2.99 per minute (and they charge the minimum of one minute even if you're only getting the number).
So 5.74 charge from 118118.

The other 2.55 is your providers charge.

Ridiculous fees.

Well, that is the cost then unfortunately. I guess if there was more use then the price could come down and be more competitive. Not sure why you think £8.29 is a rip-off, it is a lot of money granted, but for it to be a rip off you'll have to know what their investment was, the running costs are, etc.

Their charges are also well advertised in the commercials.

Somehow I just knew there would be some who thought it was ok, odd how its always the same few isn't it.
To be fair to Ruth, not that she needs me to stick up for her, she was critical of the charges in an earlier post. She's just pointing out their charges are fairly transparent.

Well if you can make the distinction of what is a ripoff and value that people need a fair wage and equipments, offices etc all cost money, then well what is there to say. But sure you could just choose to ignore reality, take no personal responsibility and just blame Baroness Thatcher :p

Directory Enquiries is now a niche service. Relatively low call volume, but high overheads due to the need for constant marketing as they jockey for market position with the other providers. Hence the call cost.

But hey, it's the free market, and that's always better for consumers, right? Right?
