But the metal can was invented the same year (according to the link above). Which also tells me that I'm as old as the ring pull!!! The only consolation is that Chris is even OLDER than the ring pull :p
I remember having to open a coke can with one of these

And the fact that coke cans were very difficult to crush vertically too, even with the old trick of denting the sides first.
 
I can remember using them for tomato juice but by the time I was old enough to drink fizzy pop (!), ring pulls were the norm.

Originally "cans" didn't need openers as canning was done in glass jars and bottles ;)

Some of my US friends talk about 'home canning'. I didn't realise they meant bottling at first, and visualised some sort of industrial production line in the garage...:)
 
Being far too young to have drunk Party 7s, my only memory of them is how high the squirt goes when they've been shaken thoroughly out of sight of the grown-ups!!! The method went - shake well then a bit more. Give to sister to take to grown-ups. Deny all knowledge of shaking.
