Been thinking of adding a canon 100 - 400L to the kit. But the £1k price is giving me 2nd thoughts...
Or do I spend £200 on a TC? to go with the 70 - 200L?

If I go for the TC will the 2x work? or do I settle for a 1.4x?

What will my focal lens be with a 1.4x on my 30d?

Which version of the 70-200L do you have? I went from a 100-400L to a 70-200Lf2.8 IS and would say even with the 1.4x TC on its sharper than my 100-400L was. I plan on getting a 2x TC in the not too distant future and will post comparison/review shots with it when i do.

If you have the 70-200Lf4, then in my opinion youd be better off with the 100-400L, mainly because it has IS, also on your 30D body the 70-200Lf4 with 2x TC would become a 140-400F8 which wouldnt AF too well if at all.
 
I'd go for the 100-400 as well and keep the 70-200, especially if it's the F4. That lens is the sharpest 70-200 canon do, I wish I'd kept mine.

Should try Kerso - Im sure the latest price I've looked at said £870 for the 100-400.

As regards the 1.4x I would get this anyway in the long term, it maybe better to carry the 70-200 and an extender than two separate lenses.

Wouldnt bother with the 2x extender from the reviews and experiences of others - quality loss seems to be high, plus the slow down in focus speed aswell.
 
I've gone for the 70-200f2.8IS +1.4 TC and am very happy

Yeah, I have to faff if I want the range > 200mm but I dont mind that much.
Most of the time I use the 70-200 as is.
I find it more versatile

As with Dreeder I'm debating getting the 2x TC as well so can get 400mm. Tho I dont expect that to line up with the 1-400f4 as it'll be f5.6 and expect lower quality.
 
Im lucky that I dont need the 2x for 400mm, ive got the 300f2.8IS with 1.4x to give me 420f4IS... which is very nice...
My real need for the 2xTC is to make the 300 into a 600f5.6IS... so i dont have to go and buy either the shockingly expensive 500mm or stupidly expensive 600mm lenses.
 
If you want I'll bring my TC along on sunday and you can try a few test shots with it. It's the sigma EX 1.4x one but they are still damn good!

I understnad that AF with the canon 2x (and maybe others) is much slower - possibly slower than the 100-400L

thanks for the offer Richard, but I'll have probably bought the thing by the end of today :) Once I make my mind up... lol I cant wait!!

What will my range be with my 70-200 and the 1.4x Including the crop from the sensor??

In case you are interested/unsure the maths are as follows...

1.6 is the sensor factor

So:
70mm * 1.4TC * 1.6Sensor = 156.8
and
200mm * 1.4TC * 1.6Sensor = 448.0
