My 24-105 L has a renewable rubber seal to stop the problem.:shrug:
Mega Peeved or what to find this out.
Google reviews, ask forums before buying!

Well i have had mine for a few years now and it has never sucked in any dust?!
Not sure on solutions but maybe getting the lens services would resolve the issue?
 
neither has mine, does it actually have dust or are you just worried about it?

There was actually an article in the Canon EOS mag this quarter which was talking about this, not for the 100-400 specifically, just in general. Their opinion was that any dust in the lens is so unlikely to cause any image issues that it wasn't worth worrying about.
 
Had mine about 3 months - so far no problems...I would go for a service - warranty perhaps??:thumbs:
 
I had mine for a year...and never noticed a problem!! In fact, I have more in my 70-200 2.8 IS than I ever did my 100-400!
 
I had mine for over a year and I found it to be a big problem.
from the day I got it I had to start cleaning my sensor but never had to clean it before I got it.:bang: I used it for airshows so I was pumping it like mad and I think the problem is dust in the camera being blasted around rather than the lens sucking it in, if you zoom slowly I don't think you will have a problem.

I noticed it on my 20D with the 100-400mm. I'd not long had it professionally cleaned and the dreaded sensor blobs started to appear. I was using the 5D for most of my togging and only really used the 20D with the 100-400mm because it has the crop sensor. The 20D was used far less, yet needed cleaning a lot more.

The solution? Learned to clean my own sensors!
 
At LensesForHire we have 15 100-400s. They all see a lot of use and none of them has any noticeable amount of dust in them.

I don't think I have dust in the lens so much Stewart, but it seems that the bellows action on the lens kicks up a ****storm of dust, if there is so much as a spec of it around in the camera it ends up on the sensor.
 
For any lens with an extending barrel and a floating rear element you need to exercise caution, and zoom slowly - you will suck air in, and you can deposit it on the sensor.
 
I've gad a 100-400 for over 2 years. No problem with dust on sensor due to this lens in 3 bodies.

It seems that some people have a problem with it others don't. I don't go overboard with house keeping, but don't have an issue with visible dust spots.

I think you might be doing something wrong. The 70-200 2.8 IS is completely sealed. There are no outer moving parts because of the internal zoom and focus. There should not be a single speck of dust in it!

That's what I thought....there is just one visible piece on the glass inside, and it doesn't effect the pictures in any way but I did buy it 2nd hand, it was already there! Hasn't gotten any more in since I've had it so who knows... :suspect:

There's dust inside my 70-200 F2.8 IS as well. Bought brand new, only used by me never repaired :shrug:
 
Any dust that I've seen inside my 400D is either fibres from changing lenses round my girlfriends flat (she has a pain in the arse wool obsession) or very minor sensor dust. Given the moving items in the camera (the mirror, the motor and the 2 shutter curtains etc, from an engineering perspective I can only assume that the majority of this dust is created by the moving parts themselves.
 
I have done a few airshows with my 100-400mm on the 5D and i have not had a problem with dust, i also change the lens on site often with no adverse problems.
guess im just lucky.
 
I've never had a problem with mine either, even though i've used it in environments where i've been caked in dust afterwards.
I suspect its a case of people who own a 100-400 seeing the rumours about it and blaming a dusty sensor on the lens, when its inevitable that will happen anyway, no matter what lens you use.
