02 Internet!!!!!

I live in the sticks of norfolk and have rubbish internet speeds because of the distance from the exchange, I was also told to expect to be kicked from time to time because of this same reason....however despite actually on getting approx a quarter of a mb rather than the 8 or so possible I never have a problem (this is with AOL).

I have been staying with my family in the middle of Stoke on Trent (where I used to have faultless AOL and SKY internet connection) and they have 02 running on very fast practically new PC's and laptops (1 at a time may I add) and I have never experienced anything so poor in all my online life!!!!

The speed I cannot argue with, its pretty good but I get kicked off at least every 2 minutes. When I asked the old man he told me that this is a recent problem of about 2 months and that before this it was good for the first 3 or so months, and that he has had all new equipment sent out to try and resolve this (so I suppose credit is due for service dept) but still the problem of kicking! You can even re-sign in immediately after being kicked but this is doing my sanity no good at all.

Has anyone else had problems recently with 02 or any other provider for that matter?
 
No & I've been with O2 for ~ 7 months now.
is he actually having problems from the exchange or is it the O2 supplied thomson router (they seem to have a rep for dropping)?
 
Has your 'old man' added any USB equipment recently. It could simply be USB bus overload that's causing the Thompson to drop the internet connection.
 
You could check out the telephone socket you plug the O2 modem in to, if it has a test socket behind the faceplate a good ideal would be to plug in there and try, this will tell you if the fault is with your internal wiring or not.

if you ask enough people youll find that lots of people have had issues with nearly every ISP. there are so many varying factors (exchange, lines, hardware, software) it can be a bit of a minefield.

O2 are supposed to be quite good, theyd be on my list if my adsl wasnt bundled into my sky package.

Is the router secure? The bloke next door could be tapping into your broadband and using up your 'fair usage' allowance hence they will be kicking you off.

It's becoming a huge problem in built up areas.

likewise the amount of routers in a confined area all on the same wireless channel.

does the connection actually drop on the router (the lights go out then come back again) or is it just the wireless thats dropping?
 
I've been with them for over a year and no problems to report.
 
No new usb's or anything else! like I said same prob on other pc too. plug ins are fine too, checked them all and has been running fine for beginning months. Oh well, back in norfolk now so will have to help next time. As to fair usage its hardly ever used, until I go there but even this is restricted to ebay, talk photography, facebook etc so nothing major.
 
In defense of O2, I have been with them for in excess of a year now with no problem. They had an issue maybe 9 months ago when a server went down and only certain sites could be entered. When I contacted them the after sales was excellent, within 2 hours the fault was cleared. Currently my download speed is 6.9 meg and upload 1.0 meg, thats on a standard package.
 
i was at my parents this weekend in norfolk. their internet speed also sucks.
i went online to switch them to o2, and the o2 website said their cheap/fast service wasnt available for that number but i could use a more expensive service that will give about 0.5 mbs

my in-laws live in the middle of nowhere in latvia. they dont even have a phone line.. but their broadband connection still gets 3-4mbs!
so it might be worth looking into a satellite service like theirs.
 
Get BT to check your line etc and the local junction box at the end of the street (?).
Had similar problem , not 02, BT found no problem with line from their end, so sent engineer to look-see and although there was no problem with my line there was one at the local junction box.

yeah i had the same prob when i lived in Reading. But BT refused to believe it was their fault and I had to basically force them to send an engineer out. the only sting in the tail is that if there is nothing wrong then they charge you a call out fee.
 
I'm presuming this is home broadband and not mobile broadband?
 
ive never had a problem with O2

i regularly get over 10Mbps and i only pay £5 a month. and thats shared between 4 of us!!

I live about 5 minutes from the centre of Newcastle.

i dont get booted off at all. Its a nice stable line, which is what i demand, as im a regular PC gamer :)

just to add. ive currently got a download speed of just over 1Mbps
 
i found 02 to be an awesome ISP, but i live in a populous part of london, so it may be better maintained. the it dept of 02 is extremely friendly and helpful.
 
There are so many things that could be at the root of the problem, especially where the BT lines are old and or routed somewhere they can be weathered and damaged. I've got a friend who has been having problems with his Virgin connection timing out, tests show he can get 1-1.5mb because of the distance from the exchange, the thing is he has a second phone line, tests on which show 4-6mb connection speed is possible. Same house and same exchange different phone lines.
