5 yr Warranty you might be surprised

So.. I was searching for something else when I saw a Canon 1dx mkii for sale at Cex for £700 with a 5 year warranty. FIVE? So I first looked at the small print and it clearly states "consumables not covered". Next step google AI that a camera is NOT a consumable. I then searched "shutter" and that comes back that it could be considered a consumable
I then email CeX and asked.. I gave them a good clear out by mentioning these parts have a life expectancy... here is what I wrote..

I listed the camera detail ref number etc
I wanted to know what was covered by warranty. Shutter, Mirror box etc all the insides of the camera are they Guaranteed for 5 yrs as with all cameras they do have an eventual lifespan ? Many Thanks and I look forward to your response :)

Not expecting a reply I was delighted to recieve this within 24 hrs

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for contacting CeX and for your email and your question regarding the warranty.
I’m happy to confirm that the entire camera is covered under the 5-year warranty, including internal components such as the shutter, mirror box, and other essential parts.

I hope this helps and if there is anything else I can assist you with, please let me know and I will be happy to help.

Well! I was interested enough to go into the shop (a few miles away) The camera looked good enough but when I checked it has over 1 and a half million shutter actuations.. haha I nearly threw it to the floor... Mine arn't that bad and mine are shot at haha

They had another one at another shop and on investigation that had less than half a million.. Thinking about the 5 yr warranty on shutter as well it still had my interest.. However on furthur conversation with the manager... If anything goes wrong they will either offer you like for like or your money back.... thats a shame as it juts seems a bit of a waste of time . Had they sent it to be fixed under warranty .. new shutter and mirror box etc it would be worth it.. But nagh I gave up

Anyways... The reason I am posting.. If you find a camera with a decent shutter and your ooing and haaing... it's all covered :)

I did buy a cheap four thirds lens from them a year or so back , but the main reason was that it had a expensive mmf3 four thirds to MFT adapter attached which they hadn’t priced in the deal . So there are bargains to be found basically due to there lack of product knowledge

So if you buy a camera for £700 from them and in 4 years time it becomes unfixable and they cannot get you a like for like will you still get £700 back or a pro rata rate ???
Oh and it will be a voucher and not cash.

Just checked that is for most used electronic equipment

How do they manage to give a five-year warranty on second hand equipment? I wore out a Zenit E in 2 years.

But then I also have a lot of second hand equipment which are still fine many years later. I guess they rely on us being honest, and also forgetting, losing receipts. Hey, how can you give a 5-year warranty on a secondhand Canon EFS 18-55 lens, mine failed a day after the 1-year Canon Warranty, to be fair it had very heavy use.

Then they say after 6 months to 5 years a voucher for current value, who is doing the valuation. It's a 6-month warranty, after that you are at their mercy.

If the price of the camera is a good deal, and then happens to go wrong, sounds like you will have a had a camera that cost nothing for that time, as you get your money back. And if nothing goes wrong, you will have had a good deal in the first place. And if you do get your money back, getting another replacement will probably be cheaper at that point. If you could find such an old item then. ;)

It does seem that it is not a wise move from them, but they have obviously crunched the numbers and it works for them.
