Hi all.

My Daughter is getting married this year she has a photographer to capture the main event, as weddings go it's a very small affair.
She has been buying up old 35mm compact cameras to leave on the tables for her friends to use.

I was wondering if any of you use a particular place to purchase 35mm 400asa film. I have done some web searches and £10.99 for Fujifilm 36 ex or £10.99 for Kodak ultramaz 24ex seems to be the best I could find.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Both films are Ok..my preference would be Fuji. I went to a wedding once and they had, on each table, cameras that you use once (can't remember what they were) and I noticed as everyone was leaving all the cameras were left (on the table unused) , surely the idea was to take the camera home and get it developed yourself as I took shots and left it on the table but didn't see the shots that I took...well silly me I should have gathered the cameras up and took the films out to use in my SLRs

Haha no worries i'm silly too ;-)

She just texted me a link to some Kodak ultra she found via an Ebay retailer 400asa 24ex 3 pack for £26.99. She needs 12 so I told her to get those.

We are paying.

Told her to get a spare to we can have a test roll. I am assuming it would be best to use the flash on these cameras indoors.

Any tips on using these cameras would be welcomed too :)

Well only would the guests, these days, know how to use a film camera, but thinking they are simple so might not be a problem and they should spot, in dim conditions, a warning to use flash.......and who is paying for development and how would you know who took what and would all the film be used.

Funnily enough I've just been Whatsapping the Daughter about that and she's very excited about the jeopardy of not knowing who took what and what the results maybe.
I'm assuming they will whip through 24 shots but if not it will be a long wait to finish the films off :)

Oh & we are paying for the develooing.

Are you sure they were unused, Brian?

The idea with putting disposables on the table is that the guests will take loads of pictures (of things the official photographer will miss, or not bother with). It's for the bride / groom (or perhaps someone organising things) to get them developed afterwards and then enjoy the results.

You might have ended up in the bad books had you nicked them all (even if unused). :D

If she's already bought the cameras then it's a bit late for this advice, but I would have suggested she just gets a bunch of disposable cameras. They'll have film already loaded and will be very simple to use.

Old 35mm compacts might not work properly, might be more difficult to use, and will probably need an array of different batteries (some of which might be expensive). On the plus side, she can probably sell them again afterwards.

Well Nige I was looking around and didn't see anyone using the cameras (except me) anyway I would have thought guests would bring their own cameras (as I did) esp for a wedding...and more silly me in that I had no idea who would develope the film and wasn't sure.... do I take it home and have it developed or leave it on the table and let the married couple do it erm I couldn't ask them........ anyway I never saw the results and only used about half the film.

Yes, she purchased 4 of them from boot sales, so that's anyone's guess if they work. She bought 10 yesterday off a business on Vinted. They are all tested and working. I'm very confident they will be fit for purpose. The product photos were very well lit and composed.


Kirsty likes to sell clothing on Vinted when she has the time and genuinely likes old things. She would not want to use anything that is going straight into landfill after use. In fact, they hardly buy anything new. She can afford to but prefers not to.


I hadn't thought of the battery issue I'm assuming most will be AA size off the listings I have seen.


In for a penny in for a pound at this point though :-)

Hopefully most will be AA, but you sometimes find that they can take things like 2CR5 or CR123 batteries, especially older compacts.

Anyway, it sounds like she's having fun so I hope it all works out well and she has a great day when it arrives!

These are fairly common, but not ubiquitous, on point and shoot cameras. If the cameras aren't AA powered these other batteries can be had from under a fiver apiece if you shop around or go online.

Sounds a lovely idea for her wedding. Maybe worth her testing a few cameras before the big day. Maybe give the bridesmaids etc (a hen night could be beyond a gentle camera run through :) ) to try out at dress fittings/ wedding shower/ whatever modern brides do etc and get the films developed & scanned at the lowest price to confirm all is good with some of the chosen cameras.

Any fresh 2CR5 or CR123 battery will be good for at least a half dozen films even using the flash on every shot.

I am assuming indoors these cameras would give better results using the flash. That said I know some won't have a flash.
As the quote goes " Lifes like a box of chocolates ........"
