I would welcome some advice please. My granddaughter will be 16 shortly and would like a small camera that she can slip into a pocket. I personally think she is better off with her phone as I don't think she will like the post processing side of a camera. I'm sure she will only shoot jpeg though.
Fixed lens with a short zoom would be preferable. There must be hundreds to choose from but real life recommendations are always a good starting point.
The cost is not the driving factor but as I suspect it may be a short lived fad I am not inclined to pay too much at this stage.

Any advice would be welcome.

I think you are right about the phone.
I’m sure she’s considered it. Do you know why she feels she needs a camera ?

A bridge camera would probably fit the bill Gordon , more reach than a phone , and probably cheaper to I would look on Wex for a good condition used one

I'd agree with the comment above, what does she want from the camera? There's been a surge in popularity for older compact cameras among younger people who like the look of the images even though they're lower quality than a current mobile phone.

The popularity of mobile phones has unfortunately decimated the consumer camera market and there's no real cheap compacts now brand new. The 1in compacts like the Sony RX100 series offer a compact pocket size body but without post processing the images won't show much improvement over a mobile phone.

I was thinking along the lines of a Nikon P900/ P 1000 etc , there is @ bridge camera section on here

A bit big to “slip in her pocket”

I’d go for a Sony Rx100. I have a IV which the wife uses occasionally. Really easy to use, viewfinder if required and a useful zoom.

Thanks for your replies.
In all honesty I don't believe that she will get better use out of it than her phone. She is not happy with the images from her phone but I suspect that is user error!
She wants an articulating screen for selfies and Bluetooth/wifi transfer of images.
The sony RX 100 series is to costly and the bridge cameras too big.
So far the canon SX740 HS lite seems to be the front runner

Get a secondhand Sony RX100 much better image quality than the Canon and you can get a Mkiv for the price of the Canon

What phone does she have? The Canon is an old camera with a very small 1/2.3in and a slow lens so they're not happy with the mobile phone image quality, I think they'll be more disappointed with the Canon.

Consider Panasonic Lumix TZ90's too.

Has all you require apart from the bluetooth/NFC but has WiFi. Used prices on Ebay start at £250 but the quality of the pocketable/hand bagable (is there such a word?) is well known.

It can also do selfies so that'll be right up a teenagers street.

One here that'll give you some idea: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/197983631623?_skw=panasonic+lumix+tz90&epid=238201641

If she gets bored with photography then you'll have no trouble getting your money back.

Just an update after all of your good advice.
We eventually went for a canon powershot sx740hs as it had all the bells and whistles that she asked for. She has been using it for about a week now and loves it. She believes that it is much better than her phone, which is important as it encourages her to use it more often. She is off to Paris with her mother next week so hopefully will get eventually more enjoyment from it.
Thanks to everyone for your help and advice

Good to hear she's happy with the choice Gordon.
