is optical zoom more important or image sensor size?

i'm new in photography, i'm confused about which camera to buy. can anyone tell me that while comparing the tech specs of cameras we should give importance to which thing image sensor size or optical zoom. specially comparing Nikon D3000 & Cannon SX260 HS
