You probably could get it repaired, although you wont have any kind of warranty for it etc. Personally I think the insurance company will right it off and replace it.

Second hand canon 300 2.8 if you eed a fast lens and a 2x extender should be a good pair, although it might come to about 2k depending on condition of both items. If you don't need a fast lens, the canon 400 5.6 is a great lens.

Thank you for the help, after I posted this i had an idea to try another laptop hdd in there which is a sata 250gb and it worked fine, although it didnt have a HDD cradle like arad85 said. I will have to do some googling to find one :) Thank you chaps
