I suppose it does depend how dark, if I half press the shutter on my 40D though it brightens the liveview display so you can see the subject, albeit a very grainy subject.

You can use live view on the 450D to bring what the sensor sees to the screen in realtime. With that on the screen you can focus manually, then zoom in on the image to nail the focus even more.

Are you using Cat6 cables? What switch/router are you using please?

The 400D does not have live view, so no this cannot be done. You need a 450D, 40D, 5D2, 1D3 or later. The 1000D might support it but I'm not sure.

I've had lots of trouble with Linksys kit. Another vote for Netgear here but the DG834G does me fine.
