I live in Okehampton, Devon. I emailed the guy you recommended and he got back to me straight away saying it was probably the lens motors. It's probably worth getting new lenses with warranties, but it'd be great to try a working lens before I do that.

Update: the 55-200 tries to work, but the motor's struggling and it usually doesn't focus. Does this prove it's not the base unit?

I've had my Nikon D40 for about 10 years, and about 5-6 years ago problems with the autofocus started to appear. I have two lenses, an 18-55 and a 55-200, and first one went then the other ( I can't remember which went first). It eventually got to the point that the autofocus now never works...
