Replacing the ram will not void the warranty, but obviously apple wouldnt cover the ram if that was to go faulty... You can actually put 16gb into a MBP but think you have to get a specific set, there is lots on the Internet about this, but the 16gb upgrade is very expensive compared to the 8gb.

In my eyes, if you are looking at the MBA (11") and getting the 4gb Ram version, I would go for the 13" MBP base model as this works out at the same price, yes you dont get SSD BUT you can always upgrade it to SSD in a couple of years (or less)/when it starts to seem a little slow, also...

Have you checked if there is a firmware update at all?! I have a customer who had problems with their Belkin router, firmware updated, and now everything is working fine. (including the wireless printing!!)
