The 17-40 is great for the money. I upgraded to the 16-35mk2. I needed f2.8 for some studio light table close up stuff that needed really shallow depth of field. Apart from that, most of the time, it has been used at f8 to f16. In that range, there is hardly anything in it so you are better off...

I have had three of the 600EX RT and the STE-3 for ages now. By the time I had sold my 580mk2, two 430mk2's and my pocket wizards, there was not that much extra to pay. Excellent wireless system and so much better than the pocket wizards. Only downside is no second curtain flash in radio mode...

Yes really. I meant an f5.6 lens witha 2x converter won't work with any Canon camera. Your 500mm is f4 not f5.6. Please post all your autofocus shots with minimum aperture of f11 :-) Think you knew what I meant though.

No Canon camera autofocuses with a 2X convertor above f5.6. No news there mate.
