I can’t remember off hand for the 3400, but you might be able to reassign the AE Lock to the function button, which means you can use the deticate AE-L for focus? Again, not sure on your model though.

A trick some of us Astro photographers use is pre focusing at invinty. Basically, during the day, focus on something far enough away so that you’re at infinity, then either take a note of where the focus marker is on the lens, or use bit of tape with a mark on it.. that way, at night, focusing...

[Not having a dig] Sharpness isn't everything :) My Nikon 58 1.4G isn't as sharp as the infamous Sigma 50 1.4 ART, but has way way more character!! Give me my 58mm any day of the week :)

How about the Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f/1.4 for something a little 'different'? I personally use the Nikon 58mm 1.4G, but on a D5 & D850 - a lens with amazing character!!
