    Ideal night for astro?

I have a nice little program on my laptop - Stellarium. Free to download - works a treat. And more than enough detail to find your way around the sky. Shows the planets, constellations, moon, nebulae - the lot. (I always have the Bigma with me when I head down country at the weekend. Captures...

    air show lens

The Sigma 500 will certainly have the range. I don't think I've ever used the x2 converter on it with anything as fast as an aircraft though! Save it for when I'm stalking something slow or static. Given our usual weather, don't think I'd want to sacrifice the stops to a converter either...

instead of 'HDR warning!', why not just not overprocess them? HDR can look good...

Agree with Dave - purely subjective. And, like art, if I like it I like it. If some people say it's overcooked, fair enough! I regularly overprocess - but it's just to p*** off my colleagues.......:naughty:

    What Macro?

Canon 100mm 2.8. Easy to carry, sharp as a tack, lightning fast focus (and even referred to by some as a 'hidden L'.) Have used it for portraits and on a focusing rail for macros (and reversed my 50mm on the front as well.) Bought off Kerso a year or so ago - worth every penny.

    Photo-editing

As already said, some basic PS skills are handy for the odd rescue but if the essentials aren't already captured, then not much point. I would use PS to 'enhance' the odd photo. For day to day stuff, much easier & less time consuming to make sure they're as close to perfect (as in 'fit for...

    Bird or Photograph

Mmmm. Nothing like a bit of deep thinking while I'm having my sarnie. Nature's cruel & wonderful at the same time. Would have to say I wouldn't have interferred. (You would save the bird in your garden just to have the hawk fly off & grab another down the street.) If it was a...

In pictures: Gordon Brown's last moments inside No 10

As said earlier - great historical value. I think we all would have jumped at the chance to take them, limited equipment or not!

    Keen but ignorant :)

Welcome Lisa. I have a great macro lens, but have used it entirely for portraits since I got it. So much for my help then! Enjoy the new camera.

New to the world of photography

Welcome to the forum Sean. Just a quick post as I'm in work. Agree with all of the above - & get a feel before you buy. I use a 40D with a battery pack & it can be quite a handful weight-wise. At the same time, very steady when it needs to be. I would say the 450 would be carted around...

    Naughty harddrive - crying daughter

Had one just like that.......actually, still have it. I've backed everything up long ago, but never got around to binning it. Mine connects just like yours, then disconnects - even though it's still clicking. But, if I leave it running for 20 mins or so, it eventually comes to life. I switch...

    New to portrait photography!

Hi Terri. Have a 40D myself. I bought a cheap 50mm 1.8 specifically for portraits (from Kerso on this site) and it's been working out fine. Have also used my 100mm for portraiture & love the results. (Lets me stand further away.) The majority were shot in a hired studio, so can't...

best portrait lens for canon 450d (beginner)

Have to agree with Matt. The 50mm has a very cheap feel to it, but don't let that fool you. Hard to beat for the price. I've got some great portraits with the 100mm though. And I find I'm not so 'in yer face' as I am with the 50mm. Once you get used to zooming in and out using your feet...

    Canon

Hi Margaret - welcome to the forum! Far too many options with both these for me to decide on one. (One has a crop sensor & the other is full frame for a start.) Do a search on Google for '5D versus 7D' - that should start you off. If you see the specifications listed side by side, it may help...
