    eh, why the nsfw tag?

New website - test speeds please?

Pingdom tests as 7 seconds from Netherlands (nearest test, 8.4 from NY) As someone who builds massive infra powering big sites, anything over a second is too slow for something I personally am building, BUT, 2 seconds would be a good goal. Your homepage weighs in at 9.1MB which is much too big...

    Internet Explorer

I, a mozilla volunteer, am currently using Chrome. As much as I love Mozilla, it's mission and open source, Chrome seems to just work no matter what I throw at it. The best browser for you is the browser that works best for you. Don't exhaust Opera as an option, too :) Firefox and Chrome have...

Beginner To Portrait or Not To Portrait - That is the question

I like this advice, and I will certainly take it on board. It takes a lot to make me even attend a wedding, never mind take photos of one! Similar advice to Paul's, but different. I guess having a budget DSLR (1100D) and lenses is great for this. I can experiment without forcing all of my...

Beginner To Portrait or Not To Portrait - That is the question

Hmm... So I guess in a slightly crowded place it would probably be fine? Just not on a street with one other person on. My phone's camera is pretty bad. The phone was £100, I'm impressed with everything but the camera (though, they didn't even do too badly with that!). Which is impressive...

Beginner To Portrait or Not To Portrait - That is the question

I've found myself watching a lot of portrait videos on youtube. Especially B&H videos; the theoretical rather than the technical aspect interests me much more. I know how to work my camera, I don't know how to compose a good photo (or didn't) So maybe I should try some more people shots. It's...

Beginner To Portrait or Not To Portrait - That is the question

I had absolutely no practice taking people photos. I'm naturally not very good with people (or at least I think I'm not!) but I somehow seem to get much better quality images of people than anything else. I do think I enjoy doing it, though. Capturing moments in human life feels a lot more...

Beginner To Portrait or Not To Portrait - That is the question

I've been looking through my photos and have notices one common point across all of my images - My people shots look better than my other shots. All of them. I'm also finding myself enjoying editing them much more than any other shot. When I started, I thought landscapes and wildlife would be...

    Focal length question

I actually found the subject of this thread quite interesting - something I too was wondering, as someone just 1 year younger than Thomas (interestingly, we both share the name Thomas, too!) The question was worded confusingly, but I think it's clear now that he's interested in "what will I see...

Mac Experts, Opinions and advice please

yeah, I heard the apple peripherals work nicely I use a laptop as my main machine. For anything requiring extra juice, I tend to outsource to AWS or my windows machine. Really though, it's a powerful laptop.

Mac Experts, Opinions and advice please

Yep, I figured that. Sadly, the stuff I've been fed by hackintoshers for years, combined with my slight apple bias kinda tilted me to being really negative about hackintosh :) If I was in such love with how Apple devices feel, I'd consider building a hackintosh now you've cleared things up -...

Mac Experts, Opinions and advice please

Just speaking from discussions I've had with people who have tried hackintoshes before here. USB isn't PCI. I hate having those USB wireless dongles sticking out my machines, especially when I move my box and they snap ;) However, you could be right. I am possibly being fed complete BS by...

Mac Experts, Opinions and advice please

Wireless cards, LAN cards, USB interfaces, just to name a few. Apple drivers natively perform better on OS X than third party stuff. Coupled with the great hardware, it's pretty tough to beat apple in that situation (not impossible, but not easy). People always forget their network cards, USB...

Mac Experts, Opinions and advice please

I made the move from Windows to Mac last year. Never going back As a linux sysadmin, the unix-like-ness of Mac is really useful, but by not being linux, I get the flexibility and availability for software that a Windows PC has I would advise against hackintoshing though. Part of the mac...

    Budget Lighting

Hmm - thanks for explaining your flash setup. I really like your shots.! I've seen two types of umbrellas so far. The reflective and the plain white ones. I understand that the plain one is used mostly for soft light, diffused, and slightly directional. And the reflective one does just that...
