Hi ... I think you will find that if you save in RAW with a 450D the resulting pic will be 4272 x 2848 pixels ... now that don't sound too lousey to me.
DPI is the print resolution ... 72dpi = low quality ... 300 dpi = high quality.
As far as i know North Carolina gets a lot of visitors in the fall (autumn) when the large deciduous forest leaves change colour before finally dropping ... it's meant to be an awesome sight.

Modern multi-layer coatings are fairly hardy with the final coat being of a clear hardening disposition, and withstand a fair bit but not excessive amount of abuse. Gone are the bad old days where looking at a lens the wrong way could result in a scratch/scuff.
