FX lenses on a DX body

This might sound like a silly question but bear with me - I'm good at asking them... I'm using a Nikon D7000; that's a crop sensor camera. I have quite a few AF-D lenses from when I shot film with my F90X, and of course they are all FX. Now when I used them on the F90X the received wisdom...

    A second aperture question

Why filters? Why not just drop the ISO?

How will advances in digital Technology change how exposures are made ?

Is this thread being delivered from the top of a marble plinth? I thought the OP was going to make a point; if he intends to, then he obviously thinks we are hungrily waiting for the pearls of wisdom and is keeping the suspense going. Me, I probably don't have long enough left to live. I'm...

    Softness and aperture.

This is probably a silly question, but I'm quite good at thinking them up... Shooting film on 35mm it was axiomatic that one needed to stop the lens down from its maximum aperture to get it to work at its sharpest. But of course, the circular image back-focussed by the lens was fully...

    Misleading or unhelpful photography terms

Why is a shutter called that when its default position is 'shut'? Surely calling it 'an opener' would be more accurate?

    Tonal compression

Thanks for all the answers guys. When I made the original post I thought it was probably a stupid question but in view of the responses, perhaps not. I said I am 'gradually getting my head round to working in digital having spent most of my life shooting film'. Insofar as the answers have...

    Tonal compression

Can someone tell me the tonal range of a RAW file? I'm gradually getting my head round to working in digital having spent most of my life shooting film. The old rule of thumb was that monochrome film, correctly exposed, could record 128 distinct tones between pure black and base white...

You might have something to learn about photographic techniques Catherine, but you obviously have a very good eye. Technique can be learned; picture sense, not so much. It's an excellent photo.

Well there you go - it gets even more interesting! See here for origins and activities of 'Matson Photo Service'... http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/matpc/colony.html

The 'SELO' mark on the back was a trade mark used by Ilford back in the 1930s and 40s.

And "Illustrious" (HMS Illustrious, an aircraft carrier) was bombed in 1941 whilst escorting convoys east of Sicily - so it seems the photographer was probably on active service in the Mediterranean theatre. If he was an official photographer the pictures would probably have an official War...

    Camera help

Ruth, if you want one lens to cover a wide range then I'd go for the 18 - 200 rather than the 18 - 300. Less reach at the far end but much better optically. I found that out the hard way!

    Camera help

If you're at the level I think you are, then buying a camera like a D600 or D800 could be the worst thing you ever do, photographically speaking. They're both much more complex than your D5100, and if you haven't yet mastered the camera you already own then all that will happen will be that you...
