Hi Henry Pick up the two part grip grip and you will find that there is a heck of a difference to the feel of the camera.

    Nikon wide-angle lens suggestions?

Is this a DX lens? If not it will possibly not be wide enough for landscape/city scape/architecture as on a crop body it will be 24mm at its widest .... EDIT...i see it is a DX lens so my point was irrelevant

    Nikon wide-angle lens suggestions?

Used Nikon 12-24 f4 or Tokina 12-24 f4 would be my choice on your crop body....both excellent lenses with a good range for most types of landscape including the fact that they are wide enough for most architecture togs...

    Best Bridge for £350?

Have you looked at the micro 4/3 system? Something like a Panasonic G3 and a couple of nice lenses can be had for your budget.... Your parents will then have the best of both worlds (AF/MF) in a easily handle able package which is much better than a bridge camera in my opinion.

    Nikon lens

Totally agree with what you mention regarding distance landscapes Bazza but the OP does suggest that interior shots of cathedral type buildings is what he wishes to use the lens for as well as landscape so that pretty well rules out any long telephoto or zoom don't you think?

    Nikon lens

But that's not wide enough on the D300 to use indoors in my opinion.
