I've got a hero black 3 so can only comment on that but if you are intending on pulling stills you really want to look at the higher end models i.e the black or silver. Battery wise, and I haven't used it for a while, I think I was getting around 45 mins - 1 hr but that was in the cold North...

Ive got a hero 3 and use my phone to check what I'm looking at. Awesome little camera which is great fun. Would suggest looking at the next one up as imho the lcd screen doesn't add much.

Shutter priority with single point would be a good place to start then play from there.
