based upon the recomendation above I have just placed an order with DSCL.
I am looking at getting about ten 20x16" prints done of gymnasts for my daughter's gym club so I placed an order for a couple of prints as samples.
Order placed on Tuesday night, Order received today, with regular status...
Mark..I am using a 85mm f1.8. I generally am able to get pretty close to the action at comps. I have also picked up a nifty fifty for use at my daughter's gym club where sometimes I am too close for the 85mm.
I have only recently bought the camera/lens and only had it out once in her gym club...
I considered the Sigma 70-200 a while ago but changed my mind due to a lot of posts on this forum and external reviews which state a lot of them have focussing issues. sounds like a great lens if you get a good one but not so good otherwise. Not sure how true this is.
My Brother is looking to sell his 70-200mm F4 L.
To be honest its a bit more than I wanted to pay as the main reason for getting the camera was taking pics of my daughters gymnastics, and I have bought some lenses for that which I am happy with. I borrowed his 70-200 and found I had to crop...
I did search through the board but couldn't find anything specifically around the EF-S lenses.
I guess I need to do a bit more reading, however, the posts here have answered my specific question. thanks for ll the responses.

Steve
Thanks for the replies,
So if I understand, the effective focal lenght of the 55-250 will be 400mm irrespective of the fact eht EF-S lens is made for a crop body.
cheers

Hi
Looking for a cheap zoom to go on my 550d.
Was looking at something like a used 70-210 f3.5-4.5, 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM, or possibly the 55-250.
I am aware that on a crop body such as the 550d the focal length of a standard lens is multiplied by 1.6.
However the 55-250 lens is built...
yeah, I could probably shoot from home with a 500mm.
My concern with the 50mm 1.8 is I have heard the focussing is a bit hit and miss, especially in low light.
The light isn't too bad to be honest. with the 85mm I was managing to get between 500-1200 sec on ISO 1600/3200 depending on where I...
Distance shooting in the Gym is not an issue, I can get as close as I like really.
I think 500mm will be ideal, but I am just concerned the 'nifty fifty' would not be up to the job.
Tugster, thanks for your response.
I thought it may have been the case that lighting was the problem. I believe that Flourescent lights flicker very quickly and shooting at fast speeds this may be a probelm. At least I know it is the lighting and not me:-)
Have you any thought on a shorter...
Hi
I posted a thread some time back asking for help regarding a lens for shooting Gymnsatics.
I have finally bought a Canon 85mm f1.8 and tried it out this week with some promising results.
The main reason for buying the lens was for my daughters comps, but I have been asked by her...
I am interested in this. With regard to Custom White Balance. If I am shooting at a gym comp in doors, if I took a picture of something white i.e a card and then select that picture via the menu for CWB. Is that all I need to do. Sorry, pretty new to all this.
thanks
