£400 in my pocket, but what portrait lens?

85mm f1.8 is a super lens for portraits. I have the 1.4 now but the 1.8 produced some beautiful portraits. The macros might be great for detail, but the big pieces of glass letting in loads of light do produce superb results and the shallow depth of field give lovely soft skin tones. Try one...

    Sigma 12-24mm Reduced @ Jessops

Wish I could have found a good one. After trying three samples of it, all soft in different places, I got fed up with it and Jessops returned my money. Just tried a friends Nikon 14/24 and that is much better at 2.8 all over than any of the Sigmas I tried. Pity about the price compared to £399.

Sigma 12-24mm on a full frame camera??? Can anyone advise.

Jessops have just returned my money for the third Sigma 12-24mm I've had from them. All three were soft, all in different areas. Thought it was pretty good flair wise, especially considering the angle of view. The trouble with trying to French flag it is that it so wide you finish up with your...

    Nikon D700 Vs D3

Someone quite high up in Nikon UK told me the shutters are the same in the D700 / D3. They have to justify the extra cost of the D3 somehow....

    Sigma 12-24mm on Nikon D700

    Nikon D700 Vs D3

D700, it's a great camera. I could have bought the D3 but the 700 fits in my bag, has the sensor cleaning and the little idiot flash is useful when the sun pops out on a wedding (it has happened this year). If you need the extra speed you can buy the grip and still have change to buy something...

    Bought a Sigma 12-24

I had a similar problem with the example shown, but mine was bad along the bottom of the frame. I took it back to Jessops and they changed it without a problem, I took some images to show them. The second one I now have is much better but I'm still not sure if it is as good as I am used to from...

Sigma 12-24mm on a full frame camera??? Can anyone advise.

lens looking good after a few more shots, but still haven't been out to give it a really good try yet. Yes £399 is a good price, I read on here or somewhere else thatr Jessops are dropping Sigma so maybe now is a good time to buy. Should be able to get that back, or make a little profit, on E...

Sigma 12-24mm on a full frame camera??? Can anyone advise.

Now have copy no. 2 and it looks as if it's a good one. Not had time to try it properly but it looks like it is pretty sharp all over. Jessops were really good about changing it and swopped it straight away. Looks like a happy ending, just want to get out and use it now. Thanks for the help...

Sigma 12-24mm on a full frame camera??? Can anyone advise.

Bought one! Decided it was a good idea and was reassured it could be changed if it was soft even though it was in a sale at Jessops. It's pretty wild at 12mm so should be a lot of fun. Just took a few pictures with it and found it to be soft on one side. This was the last one in stock, so...

    Nikon AF-S 17-35mm f2.8D

I used to have one and it was a super lens, liked it a lot. I sold it when I had the D2x / D200 /D300 for the 12-24 DX and now I'm onto the D700 wish I still had it. Now I have the 24/70 Nikkor it seems an expensive lens for just the 17-24mm bit of the range so I'll probably go for the Sigma...

    Alternative to 14-24 on D700?

Oooops, sorry to post another reply Naboo. I didn't see my previous reply on here from yesterday as it was on page 2 and I thought there was only a page 1. Well I've not been up long. Cheers.

    Alternative to 14-24 on D700?

Thanks for posting that pic Naboo. It's an odd distortion, the way it seems to flick up at the edges. If it was just a normal distortion it could be easy to get rid of, but that wavy look would be impossible I guess. Am looking at the Sigma 12-24mm now as an alternative and have posted a thread...

Sigma 12-24mm on a full frame camera??? Can anyone advise.

Thanks everybody for the advice. They have one in Jessops for £399 which seems a good price, so I want to try it and then may buy it. I've looked around the reviews you have recommended and seems like there are some good ones out there. Just hope I find a good one. Thanks again.

Sigma 12-24mm on a full frame camera??? Can anyone advise.

Anyone had any experience of the Sigma 12-24mm on a full frame sensor camera. At a third of the price of the Nikon 14-24 mm it does seem tempting, plus 2mm wider! I'm not too bothered about 2.8 on a wide angle zoom so that is not too much of a problem. The Sigma is lighter too and using filters...
