The tripod was completely still. Tried a few others which look similar at that length. I can post other examples up if it helps but it won't be until the morning.

Erm..how should this compare against my nifty fifty? It seems very soft at 50mm. Both taken whilst mounted on tripod at 1/3 second at F/2.8 Does this look right?? I'm worried!

Yeah you're right - It's the non-IS version. I certainly like the look of the Tamron 17-50 but the extra money puts me off a bit. If I can get hold of one second hand then I might consider it but I'd also be losing 20mm from the Sigma.

I don't think the 17-40 quite has enough range in it. 40 seems a bit short to me. I'm only struggling with the kit lens because I don't feel it produces high quality images. Most of my shots are completely unsharp.

If it's purely for nights out etc then i'd go with the Ixus. I just bought my gf an Ixus 860IS and it seems pretty decent so I can personally vouch for that, although I think the 870IS is out now, just depends on how much you want to spend really.
