If you install the software that comes with the 5100 (Viuew NX2) when you switch to edit mode there is an option at the top to highlight the focus point. That should at least confirm that's the issue. I personally always use single point AF to avoid things like that

Hmm ok, I have play around with this and last attempt last night i had the gap in between shots at 10 seconds and only managed 50 shots before it gave up. looks like I need to one of the above methods as I think 10 seconds already would ruin any attempt at getting a decent result.
