Yes agreed...although I was thinking of a second hand VRII which brings the price down to something comparable....having said that there are features of the G2 that I really like such as the Tap in console which should get over the obsolescence issue....the G2 is also a bit warmer than the Nikon...
I want to get an f2.8 lens in this zoom range.....and here in the UK I can get a new Tamron for roughly or maybe a little more a used Nikon.
Which one should I go for and why?

I have the S version and wondering if it's worth upgrading to the P version...it seems not given the response so far.
Does anybody have any experience of the new Nikkor 70 to 300 E f 4.5-5.6 lens.
I have the older version (G) and while its superb at the lower focal lengths it is a little soft at the outer reaches. Is the new version any better and therefore worth upgrading to?

Not sure if you are sorted and a bit late joining this thread but I have the 80-400 and its great....Picked it up second hand for just under 1k....but make sure you get the latest model.....nice and sharpened very happy with the images....
