    Cropping images

Thanks - I do understand now! That makes sense. However, so far I haven't done such a crop as my photos look noisy at that resolution, so maybe I need to improve my technique and try and use as low an ISO as possible (is 100ISO low or high, I can never remember!). I shall play around and see...

    Cropping images

At the risk of sounding a bit dim, what exactly does a 100% crop mean? Or 50%, or whatever - surely a 100% crop means the whole thing and therefore isn't a crop at all? Help!

    star indentification

It is the planet Venus - it is often visible just around sunrise or sunset and is always towards the Sun (it is inside our orbit - so it can't be on the opposite side of us from the Sun). The light from any object in the heavens has to pass through our atmosphere - this is what causes...

    400d is so annoying ...

As I can't afford an upgrade, I'll just have to learn a new technique. Either that or book in for some plastic surgery .

    400d is so annoying ...

Thanks for the tips - I use my right eye but I don't feel like I press my face hard against the camera. I think the eyepiece extender will have the effect of distancing me from the camera, but it may be worth a go. As for Nikon, :gag: (only joking, but I've invested so much in Canon already...

    400d is so annoying ...

I have a 400d and it (not me) takes great photos. However, I'm constantly finding that the carefully chosen settings for a shot or sequence of shots is ruined because my cheek presses against the selection buttons and changes key settings such as ISO (especially when in portrait orientation)...

Is it worth upgrading 400D to 40D

I have a 400d and I recently sold a Canon 75-300 IS and replaced it with a Canon 70-200 f/4 L, and I definitely made the right decision regarding the upgrade - the 40d would have given me extra features, but I would still have soft pictures. The 70-200 has made me feel like a better...

Sigma 105mm macro lens hoods rant! * (new title!)

Ditto - both my Sigma's hoods reverse and are good solid items - probably tougher than the hood on my Canon 70-200 f/4.

    Autofocus speed

I always try to use the centre focus point, and with servo mode set. However, I think that trying to focus on the edge of the bird with that focus point is currently beyond my skill. Quite often, my lens goes so far out of focus that I can't even see the bird through the viewfinder because the...

    Autofocus speed

I am a bit confused about how autofocus works - I have a Canon 400d, which may or may not be relevant. I am missing alot of wildlife shots because my lens can't pick out the subject (it's a Canon 75-300mm IS) and by the time it has focused, the subject has gone - especially true when trying...
