    I agree with the trial and error. To begin take a basic meter reading but bracket +/- 1 stop to see if it helps. Light beams sometimes show up better with a polarising filter. A bit of subtle post processing can help them stand out (e.g. reduce darks (in Lightroom), play with contrast a bit)...
