It's great to get a good image straight out of the camera, but almost always I look at my snaps and think 'oh that's a little dark' or 'it's a shame that sign was there'. A quick PP can correct these. I doubt I've ever seen a prize winning photo that hasn't been PPd and there's a reason for that.

Thanks for the advice. I'm taking ND for landscape, etc. I think I'll just get one and have a practise with it before I go...there's plenty of interesting wildlife around Stoke at the weekend ;)

OK - so by the sounds of it no CPL required - thanks guys! I'll be taking ND and ND grad filters, was just a little concerned about saturation as much as anything.

I'm undecided about getting a CP filter. I've read plenty about them and still aren't sure, so advice please. Is it useful to have on safari for photographing animals? Anyone who has any comparisons - pics would be very much appreciated. btw - was going for Hoya HD - good/bad/indifferent?

I've recently swapped my 55-200 for a 55-300 and am glad I did. It's not as good as the 70-300 (not full frame, slower to autofocus) but I'm pleased with the shots I've been getting and it is cheaper if budget is important. The VR is good, I can easily take hand held images at 300mm. You can...

I did the same as you when choosing my first camera - I dithered and read and stalled...and finally on a spur bought a D40. Upgraded a year later to a D90 because although the camera felt right and everything, I wanted more control, I wanted the bracketing feature, I wanted more megapixels. Love...

Can you post the picture so people can look? 1s exposure is long time even with small aperture if you don't have enough ND filter on your lens.

The most important thing I've learned is to think before you shoot! Find something that catches your eye. You don't have to be looking into every nook and cranny, just take your camera and walk. If something catches your eye while yo're not thinking about it, then it has some appeal, somewhere...

I don't know I wonder this too. I remember having my first digital - a Nikon Coolpix with 3.2 MP. WOWWWWWW that was loads!!! There must become a point where it is useless having more though? Either sensors will have to get bigger or pixels smaller but as the pixels get smaller they get more...

I love HDR when it's done well, can't wait to get my hands on a D90 to have a go at it myself. But some of it seems pointless and just 'because I can'. HDR has its place, but so does taking a great shot - well composed, great lighting and capturing the mood and moment.

Depends on the image. You've really enhanced the bird on that one using selective colouring, but some of it is just pointless.
