I found it useful when doing safari - but only because the animals would be moving fairly slowly (at least relative to motorsports).. would imagine as people have said that you probably need it to 'just work' so might be best to leave it off!

Yeah DSCL are great for all sorts of enlargements at cheap prices.. I have around 50 24x18 (iirc) and at a pound each you really can't go wrong..

Also depends largely on the kit you have; much easier for a newbie to get into macro cheaply with a set of tubes and a nifty fifty than doing sports on a dull day for example when fast zoom lenses rule..
