Just weighing in with another +1 for the tamron 90mm, it's a peach of a lens .. Also have the 70-300 VR which I would also recommend, gets a bit soft at 300mm but for the price can't go wrong
Both great lenses and very sharp, on a crop sensor body the 35mm will become more like a 50mm and the 50mm will become more like an 85mm
I would go with the 50mm if portrait photography is something your planning on doing but perhaps a more general walkabout lens would go for the 35mm

May I suggest looking at a used Nikon D3000, great little camera with an in built guide mode to help newcomers. This has since been replaced with the D3100 but that will be out of your price range.
You may also be able to stretch to a Canon Eos 450D, or 1000D both are solid choices.
