New firmware out for 40D guys - 1.08

Oooh just updated mine from 1.05 to 1.08. It took a while, only because when it asked me if I wanted to update I pressed "menu" instead of "set" and then sat looking at a black screen for two minutes until the camera powered off. :bonk:

Setting black & white point in curves

I think it's something to do with printing. One of the PS books I have (which I can't find at the moment) says something about anything below 15 will always print at black, and anything above 240 will print as white. So if you do curves at 0 and 255 and print it, you'll get fewer details in...

    thinking of selling my 350d

My black one + kit lens sold recently on ebay for 235. That was the second time I listed it. The first time it sold for 280, but the person who bid for it in the last second reported his account as being taken over, so I couldn't even offer it to the second bidder and had to relist :(

White Skies To Blue in Lightroom ?

Lightroom is ok for adjusting the pic as a whole but if you want to do something with just one area you're better off doing it in PS. I'd try and replace the sky completely with something else. It shouldn't be too hard to do as the sky is quite blown compared to the rest of the pic so it...

    Laying down multiple images

Maybe not what you want but you can do basic printing in XP. Select all the pics in Explorer and right click->Print. You can only select certain defaults but it's a quick and easy to get multiple pics on one sheet.

Wow. One of the most ingenious browser addons I've seen...ever

I like that! It gets a bit slow to download the pics at times but that's probably just my connection.

I very nearly ordered a 40D today but I think I might hang on until the end of the month just in case now!

Point and Shoot for the mum-in-law

Hi :) Need some point and shoot advice! We're looking to get a camera for my mum-in-law. She's 60 in a couple of weeks and I could do with finding something that's easy to use (including uploading to the PC) and not too difficult to hold one-handed, as she occasionally uses a walking...

Canon Sensor cleaner not working right

Do any of these sensor cleaning gizmos work? I've just recently had to clean my 400D as it was covered in dust  Maybe I should return it under warranty too :)

    Canon 430EX vs 580Ex mk2?

I use the 580 mostly now. The 430 only ever comes out when I want to use a flash off-camera as you can trigger it from the 580.

    Canon 430EX vs 580Ex mk2?

If it's just for casual use then the 430EX would serve you well. I've had one for over a year now and it's excellent. I did buy a 580EX II as well in the summer because I was doing a wedding. It's much bigger (as you'd expect) and has a few extra features but generally there's not a great...

    Rituals

I usually just check the four buttons (ISO, metering, AF and WB) on the 400D as I've been caught out a few times in the early days by leaving things on the wrong settings :bang: Anything else is usually adjusted pre-shot as it depends on the situation or the lens being used.
