i have just got a nikon d90 and photoshop wont open the raw pics from it but it will from my d40x can anybody shed some light on this please

my friends have asked me to take some photos of them for there new house to go on the wall so i want to make them impressed but i am worried cause i have said i will do it... but i have no lighting equipment or anything ....all i have is my nikon d40x with the 18-55 kit lens and photoshop any...
