Definitely hand baggage. I would never trust the carrier to look after my gear. Last time I travelled in May this year I just used a small camera rucksack with some room for extras.
Well the on-board flash is probably going to be a little harsh so it might be worthwhile trying to difuse it a little. You could hold any semi-transparent whitish plastic material in front of the flash when you take the shots.

If you are planning on doing a fair bit of post processing and editing then a tablet is going to be great help. It's much eaasier to use and more accurate when using pen strokes as opposed to mouse strokes.
Wouldn't it be nice to know the cost of manufacture for some of this kit? I can't help feeling that Tommy has a good point here. Of course, top manufacturers have a right to charge extra for quality but some of the pro prices are a little silly. If the D700 was £800 cheaper then I'd be saving...
