with regards to mounts... 5 or 6" left and right with either 4 or 5 top and bottom. Gives an even wider perspective.
Just done some 8 x 10's and it worked well with the 4:5 ratio too. If it was equal top/bottom they looked almost square.
Ink technology is pretty good nowadays and there is even compatibles for the 'big' printers.
Had an iP4300 which showed the same results as yours and tried quite a number of 'deep cleans' but NBG. It's more than likely the head and like you said it would be cheaper to replace the whole...
Bare in mind the client choosing a frame and mount that doesn't 'go' with the image. Plus the time they spend choosing which takes up your valuable time when you could be seeing more customers.
Have you thought about offering a final product. A small selection of Frame and Mount combinations...
