Go for the 50mm. I got one over the summer and I love it! Best 50 quid I ever spent (bought it in Hong Kong). I have the 1.8 not sure about 1.4 never used one but can't recommend the 1.8 50mm enough.

I am no expert, but I really like the lay out. It has a very professional feel to it. Pictures were stretched on my laptop however as you pointed out in pt2. Have you created it yourself?
