What to upgrade the stock Nikon 18-55mm with?

Yes thanks I'm reading up on that, trying to see if it fits Nikons. I'll also check out the Sigma 17-50mm I think

What to upgrade the stock Nikon 18-55mm with?

I have a 70-300mm, so that's covered and a very nice lens. What's a good lens about £300 that can replace the stock 18-55mm? It's on a D3100 Thanks,
